Meet Mike Smith, 56, a retired tow truck busi- ness owner living in Marco Island. He and his wife, Julie Smith, own a 1995, 32-foot Aronow cigarette named 1-of-1.

How did you take up boating?
When I was a little kid my parents bought a lake place in northern Minnesota, so I’ve been up and around boats my whole life.

What do you enjoy most about boating?
Since I’m handicapped, this is one thing I can still do that I love. I lost my left leg in ‘08 and can’t do a lot of things I like.

Where do you usually take the boat?
Anywhere in the Gulf, Cape Romano, Keywayden Island. We go out three to four times a week with friends, but also my wife and I enjoy going out alone.

Any favorite spots?
We have a bunch of bars and restaurants we love to stop at.

What stands out to you about being on the water in South Florida?
The freedom and clear water. There's just some- thing about being on the water with friends and fami- ly. There's nothing else like it.

Must have items during trips?
EPIRB, life jackets and refreshments.

What is the farthest distance you have traveled?
Going 100 miles for boat races from Marco to Englewood and back to Marco.

Describe your most challenging experience on the water:
We got caught in a storm that just popped up. It was crazy with 6- to 7-foot waves near Gordon Pass. We were six people on board and we diverted into Naples and aborted the trip. It was just too dangerous.

What is your dream boat?
The boat I have.

Best advice to new boaters:
Take a safety course and learn the tides. Be nice to other boaters.
