Dress as a pirate, get a workout at lighthouse gala
Here’s a workout you may not have considered: climbing 175 stairs to the top of the Hillsboro Lighthouse to see the world’s only working second-order bivalve Fresnel lens.
Public access to the lens room will occur only once this year — during the 113th Anniversary Fundraising Gala taking place Friday, March 13. Just don’t forget your athletic shoes.
“It’s a nice little workout,” said Debbie Divich of the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Society (HLPS), who is planning the event. “I’m 58 and I don’t exercise or work out and I don’t find it a problem.”
Divich says that’s because there’s four landings where people can stop to catch their breath. The first landing has a patio boasting a “spectacular 360-degree view.”
Guests may even want to don a puffy pirate shirt and other “classy” pirate attire in keeping with the occasion’s buccaneer theme. Otherwise, dressing in black and white to match the colors of the lighthouse is requested.
Only 15 people at a time are allowed on top of the lighthouse to prevent overcrowding. Because there can be a wait, the first 20 guests who fork out $50 each will be able to jump to the head of the line, get a tour of the lens room and have their photo taken next to the diamond lens.
Last year, HLPS sold all tickets in less than two weeks. This is the fourth year that the non-profit has invited the public to enjoy the historic navigational aid.
For $170 per person, or $1,313 for a captain’s table of eight, expect a feast: hors d’oeuvres, salad, assorted fresh rolls, plated duet entrée with Maine lobster tail and filet mignon served with whipped Yukon gold potatoes, grilled asparagus spears, baby French carrots, and a dessert bar, prepared by Hugh’s Catering in Oakland Park.
Also expect an open bar and 1960s music, soul and Motown before both a silent auction and live auction for a chance to get a ride on Goodyear blimp.
Proceeds from the event will help pay for replacing the railing outside the lantern room. Outer cross beams are also slowly being replaced.
Businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring the fundraiser will not only be advertised on marketing materials but will also take home a swag bag of souvenir items along with a yearly business membership to the HLPS.
